AFL Tips Round 11, AFL Tipping 2018: Round Preview and Expert Analysis

SYDNEY vs CARLTON @ THE SCG, Friday 7.50pm

As usual, the haters will be asking why Carlton have received yet another Friday night game in the prime-time TV slot, but that is a tad unfair when you consider the long-term and consistent injuries Carlton have had this year. All being said too, Carlton has been playing some great football and they took it right up to Geelong at the Cattery last weekend, which is not an easy thing to do for any team.

The Swans on the other hand, have looked seriously dangerous in the last couple of weeks and they are bringing back that hard edge that the Bloods are renowned for. The Swans are short dollar favourites for this one and deservedly so; it will be their game to lose and it is imperative that they start winning more games at their home, the SCG. We feel Carlton will be competitive, but just how competitive remains to be seen.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Carlton +54.5 ($1.92)

WESTERN BULLDOGS vs MELBOURNE @ ETIHAD STADIUM, Saturday 1.45pm

The frustrations at the kennel keep getting worse, as they had it won at halftime against the Pies last weekend. A goal-less 2nd half completely put the boys from Footscray firmly in the doghouse as they find themselves struggling to keep their 2018 season alive.

Melbourne, on the other hand, is currently the SWAG team of the competition. Once known as the weakest, most undisciplined side, they have turned it all around very quickly to become the number one contested ball side in the competition. For the second time in a row they have gone on to win their games by more than 90 points and they will get their chance to do it again this coming weekend against a despondent Western Bulldogs side.

Will the Doggies respond? If they can play 4 quarters of footy like they did in the first half against Collingwood last week, then they could cause an upset as Melbourne are due for a loss. But we’re thinking Melbourne will be too strong all over the ground to allow that to happen.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Melbourne Win ($1.19)

HAWTHORN vs PORT ADELAIDE @ UNIVERSITY OF TASSIE STADIUM, Saturday 2.10pm

The Hawks head down to their old stomping ground in Launceston to take on the well-rested Port Adelaide Power boys. The Hawks have lost their last 3 games and appear to be losing touch with the 8 pretty quickly. But we all know what Alisdair Clarkson is like and we’re sure the boys from Glenferrie Oval will want to get a W on the board pretty quickly, to help keep their season alive.

Port Adelaide will be well rested after their China game and will want to start the back end of their season with a win. They are relatively injury free apart from their big man Paddy Ryder having severe complications with his Achilles.
This should be a real tussle as you don’t see too many Hawthorn teams lose 4 games on the trot, also being in Tasmania proves an advantage for the Hawks.

GOLD COAST vs GEELONG @ METRICON STADIUM, Saturday 4.35pm

Believe it or not but this will be Gold Coast’s first game at home for the entire season due to the Commonwealth Games. They will be fresh back from China and ready to rumble for the 2nd half of the season. But will they have enough to stop the well-travelled Geelong side from coming up and stealing their thunder? They will really be hoping Captain Tom Lynch will be available for this one.

For the Cats, this will be Gary Ablett’s first game against his old side and we’re sure he’ll know his way around Metricon quite nicely – that is indeed if they decide to take him on the plane in the first place.

This one has Danger Game written all over it but the importance is just too high for the Cats to win here. Gold Coast’s season is all but done and the Cats will want to press as high up in the 8 as they possibly can. Games like this are too important for the Cats to lose.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Geelong Win ($1.26)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Geelong 1-39 ($2.10)

ESSENDON vs RICHMOND @ THE MCG, Saturday 7.25pm

This year’s Dream Time game should be as good as ever, as the Bombers come off two consecutive victories. The lads from Windy Hill have turned it all around and are starting to get their structures correct. But will it be enough for them to come out and win against the might of Richmond? They are certainly finding their mojo again and if they do indeed find a way to get up against the Tigers, then the saving of their season would have been made complete. Finals will definitely be on the menu.

For the Tigers, they did what they always do and win the games they are meant to win. They looked tired at various stages against the Saints last weekend, after coming home from the West with their tales between their legs. The Tigers will be sweating on the fitness of Superstar forward Jack Riewoldt as he was knocked out early in the game against the Saints.

Either way, this game should be a ripper and we’re expecting a lot of magic here on Saturday night, Dreamtime football.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Richmond Win ($1.35)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Essendon +21.5 ($1.92)

WEST COAST vs ST.KILDA @ OPTUS STADIUM, Saturday 6.10pm

The Eagles are seriously flying really high right now and I don’t know if they’re coming back down any time soon. They disposed of the Hawks quite easily without many guns firing last weekend and they are showing glimpses of being real premiership contenders this season.

The Saints, on the other hand, have been doing what they have been doing all year. Showing glimpses of brilliance, but not putting together four quarters of electricity to come home with a win. They will need to do this, and then some, if they are to beat the Eagles on their home deck. The Saints have played at Optus Stadium already, so they should know what they are getting themselves into. But unfortunately for Saints fans, this game is only winnable if the Eagles actually go into it thinking the Saints are easy beats. I hope for Saints fans this happens, but if you’re an Eagles fan you should be pretty confident knowing your boys will get the job done, as all good teams do.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: West Coast Lead at every quarter ($1.25)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Saints +53.5 ($1.92)

NMFC vs BRISBANE @ ETIHAD STADIUM, Sunday 1.10pm

If you aren’t convinced about North Melbourne yet, then go back and watch the Hawks, Swans and Fremantle games from last week. They were nothing short of brilliant in all areas of the field and should have had the game done and dusted at quarter time, if it weren’t for inaccurate kicking.

The Lions are undoubtedly the best 1-9 team going around. They have taken it up to everyone and even gave the Bloods a good run for their money last weekend. They will be facing a battered and bruised North Melbourne team who are travelling home from the West. If they can take advantage of this, then this game could truly be an upset waiting to happen.

But like most teams who have a real chance at playing finals this season, you’d expect the Kangas to turn it on and win the games they’re meant to win. They will be fully aware of Brisbane’s capabilities and will try and negate their elite midfielders, Zorko and Beams. All we’re hoping for is yet another exciting Brisbane display to make a real game of it on Sunday.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: NMFC Win ($1.22)

COLLINGWOOD vs FREMANTLE @ THE MCG, Sunday 3.20pm

The Hot Pies aren’t that cold anymore and completely turned the game on its head last Friday night against the Western Bulldogs. Their elite midfield brigade is on fire right now and they’ll be hoping all their stars can step up on Sunday.

Fremantle had a real hit out last weekend against North and they will be sore and bruised. Nat Fyfe was brilliant as usual and young, up and comer Adam Cerra will leave all Freo fans excited at what lies ahead for them. They will really want to win here today because if they do lose, they slip further away from the 8 and it could almost mean curtains for 2018.

The Pies love the open spaces of the MCG and they will welcome back Daniel Wells into their team this week. Whenever Daniel Wells plays in any team, the team generally goes on to win and we’re expecting this to happen on Sunday afternoon.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Collingwood Lead at every quarter ($1.67)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Collingwood -27.5 ($1.92)

ADELAIDE vs GIANTS @ ADELAIDE OVAL, Sunday 4.40pm

Adelaide are seriously injury-depleted right now and got absolutely walloped last weekend against the Demons. This is something the Crows boys are not used to and they will want to make up for this against the Giants.

Talking about injury-depleted, the Giants just can’t seem to buy a trick this year. This game last year they showed the Crows who was boss, but we’re thinking they might struggle this week if Adelaide gets back some of their big stars. If they lose this one, it will be 5 in a row and the signs for September do not look good.

At this stage, we’re not sure who is going to come into both teams but as it is being played at Adelaide Oval we’re going to go with the Crows to get some redemption for last week’s insipid display against the Demons in Alice Springs.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Adelaide Win ($1.32)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Adelaide Win ($1.32)
