AFL Tips Round 6, AFL Tipping: Round Preview and Expert Analysis from Sports Guru

WESTERN BULLDOGS vs CARLTON @ Etihad Stadium, Friday Night 7.50pm

We start the week off with the infamous Friday night footy game. No matter how much you claim to know about footy or the facts leading into a game, a spanner is always sure to be thrown into the works when it comes to Friday night games. Don’t expect anything different in this Friday night instalment between The Bulldogs and Blues. With only 1 win out of a possible 10 combined for these 2 clubs, you better believe that both teams are desperate for this win. Will the travel from Perth be too much for these young pups to recuperate in time or will a Kreuzer-less Blues outfit cruise in for the win?

GEELONG vs SYDNEY @ GMHBA Stadium, Saturday Afternoon 1.45pm

A depleted Sydney squad journey down to what can only be described as one of the toughest road trips to seek a victory in the AFL. If anyone has come close to mastering this mean feat it has to be The Swans, recording an impressive 2 wins from the last 3 games these two clubs have played down in Geelong. With no Hannebery and more importantly NO FRANKLIN it’s hard to envision The Swans triumphing in this one especially when you consider The Cats welcome big Tomahawk back into the team after missing The Port game with a minor issue. The cats showed last week that their younger brigade is up for the challenge in 2018 and we believe they will get the chocolates in this one.

NORTH MELBOURNE vs PORT ADELAIDE @ Etihad Stadium, Saturday Afternoon 2.10pm

Easily the biggest surprise packets to date so far in this young season, The Kangaroos aren’t taking a backwards step for anyone. They are young, disciplined, follow direction and are now starting to generate some belief within their ranks that they can be serious top 8 contenders after taking the scalp of the Hawks last week. On the other hand, The Power’s impressive start to the season is beginning to strain a little bit with consecutive losses, off-field issues to one of their young guns and the unfortunate season-ending ACL injury to Hamish Hartlett. We are seriously starting to wonder if Kochie has been walking past any black cats at night over in Alberton! If Goldstein can capture the form which saw him dominate the ruck last week and give his on ballers first use of the ball again, then The Roos are a real chance for another upset.

GWS GIANTS vs BRISBANE @ Spotless Stadium, Saturday Afternoon 4.35pm

The only danger to The Giants chances in winning this one will be if they become complacent and forget to respect their opposition. The Giants have opted to line up without a recognised ruckman with the omission of Dawson Simpson, which means Stefan Martin should have an absolute field day winning hit-outs to his heart’s content. The question is do The Lions have a midfield that can take advantage of this mismatch? Unfortunately, we don’t see the likes of Ward, Shiel and Coniglio being overwhelmed by the starting centre square trio of Berry, Beames and Zorko.

HAWTHORN vs ST KILDA @ University of Tasmania Stadium, Saturday Night 7.25pm

Even though they played in a Draw, Alan Richardson would have been far more pleased with his troops’ endeavour and effort at home against the Giants. Now they must back last weeks performance with another solid outing against a Hawks team who they have trounced once before at the same venue a year earlier. On the other hand, The Hawks played like they were witches hats in the first half against the Roos in the last round and allowed 75 points to be scored against them in a half. Slow starts have become somewhat of a pattern for the Hawks, whilst St Kilda is exactly the sort of club who if they can get off to a fast start over an opposition can generate that early momentum into a win.

ADELAIDE vs GOLD COAST @ Adelaide Oval, Saturday Night 7.40pm

No Sloane, No Crouch brothers, No worries! Why would we come to expect anything less than a stellar performance by this impressive Crows unit and that’s exactly what they delivered away vs Sydney last week. Don Pyke has really implemented a calculated game plan where he attacks the opposition’s weaknesses and exploits them to the fullest. The Suns have been much improved under Stuart Dews reign and have 3 wins for the season to show for it. However, we are not convinced they are the level where they can quite challenge the Crows yet. The Suns have never beaten Adelaide since they joined the competition in 2011, we are expecting a more spirited affair this time around especially as the Suns have conceded the 7th least amount of points in the league.

ESSENDON vs MELBOURNE @ Etihad Stadium, Sunday Afternoon 1.10pm

They say a week is a long time in footy but neither of these teams gets to experience that feeling this week as it will only be 3 and 4 days respectively of rest these two clubs will have since they last played. Essendon love it out on their home deck at Etihad as all of their wins have been at the venue, however injuries to Begley and Green will put a strain on things, that’s if Brendan Goddard hasn’t already? On top of the injuries Essendon will be resting key personnel in Bellchambers and Myers whilst The Demons have elected to rest none of their players but that’s not to say they aren’t changes to their side. Apparently, Christian Petraccas dog is a bombers fan and saw to biting his owner’s hand midweek which has left the budding star out of action for round 6, along with the in-form Dean Kent who is nursing a hamstring injury. With the thirst for the contest Melbourne showed against The Tigers, we believe if they can replicate that form and with all the on-field disharmony happening down at Windy Hill that Melbourne should be too good on the day.

COLLINGWOOD vs RICHMOND @ MCG, Sunday Afternoon 3.20pm

The match of the round for mine, Two giant clubs of the competition who are in form and will battle it in front of a predicted 90,000 at the MCG, it just makes the mouth water with anticipation. Richmond like to throw numbers at the contest in the middle and overwhelm their opposition with precision handballs out of traffic and then run in waves into an open forward line more often than not. Collingwood has taken note of this formula and have begun to adopt the same approach and are somewhat a mirror to The Tigers style of play. Names like Martin, Cotchin, Pendlebury and Sidebottom how can this game be anything other than a classic. The only way to predict a winner in this one is to go with the side who has shown they can play at this high level for longer and that’s exactly what James and I have done in this one.

FREMANTLE vs WEST COAST @ Optus Stadium, Sunday Afternoon 4.40pm

Nothing is more enjoyable to watch in footy than the Western Derby and this edition at the new Optus Stadium will be a blockbuster no doubt. West Coast currently sitting second on the table but are only four points ahead of the Dockers which means there’s a lot at stake than just pride. Nic Nat seems to have fully recovered from his knee injury and the game is better for it. They say father time is undefeated however Aaron Sandilands may be the exception to that as he also has the Fremantle midfield firing on all calibre. To predict a winner in this one will be tough but with Freemantle having so many fresh faces in the team we have to lean a more experienced West Coast.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: West Coast to Win ($1.65)
