HAWTHORN vs SYDNEY @ MCG, Friday Night 7.50pm

Who likes their wet weather football? That’s exactly what we are going to see Friday night in Melbourne between these two modern day rivals, with an expected 80 mm of rainfall forecast. Expect a low scoring, tight affair, which if history is to be repeated, will end up in another single digit thriller.

The last three encounters have been decided by a goal or less, with the result going in the Hawks favour each time, whilst the game total has reached no higher than 142 points in the games played at the MCG since 2015. The Swans will once again be without Buddy Franklin, who has an average of 2.3 goals against his old side, which – incredibly – is his lowest average against any side in the competition. The Hawks sit 4th on the ladder with a healthy percentage of 121.5% and will be looking to continue the momentum they are building in season 2018 with a win that will consolidate their place in the top 4.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Sydney +26.5 ($1.17)

GIANTS vs WEST COAST @ Spotless Stadium, Saturday Afternoon 1.45pm

The Decimated Giants will be hoping for a reprieve this week from the injury God’s after a humiliating 61 point defeat to the cats, with the possible inclusions of Lobb and Cameron, who are integral to teams game day structure. The Giants have been very wasteful in front of goals this year having not kicked more goals than behinds since round 2, whilst the Eagles are on the opposite end of the spectrum, kicking more goals than behinds in all but one match this season.

The much-maligned Jack Darling is starting to show us his full potential and it’s been a beautiful site to see, he along with the return of NicNat have been key factors to the Eagles success so far. In saying that if Naitanui is unable to escape his 1 match suspension, it will heavily influence the result of this game as GWS has never beaten West Coast when Naitanui has played.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: West Coast +30.5 ($1.22)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: West Coast +30.5 ($1.22)

CARLTON vs ESSENDON @ MCG, Saturday Afternoon 2.10pm

Joe Daniher has finally submitted to injury with the early onset of osteitis pubis and will be out of action for a month, which explains his poor form to start 2018. While we’re on the topic of key forwards who will be missing, we should add that Levi Casboult will also be out for a month. Who will be more desperate for a win in this one? Will it be the Blues who are yet to give their long-suffering fans the taste of victory in the new season or will it be the Bombers who look to be shell-shocked and lost out on the field and furthermore are even receiving bronx cheers from their own supporters during matches. One thing is for certain, there will be no better stage then Saturday afternoon on the MCG. to right the wrongs from the weeks before and give their respective fans a win to savour over a long-standing enemy.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Carlton +45.5 ($1.25)

GOLD COAST vs MELBOURNE @ GABBA, Saturday Afternoon 4.35pm

Yet another game for the Suns in which they don’t find themselves playing a home game at Metricon Stadium. There really isn’t much the club can do about it as the Commonwealth games clashing with the start of the AFL season was a rare anomaly, in saying that the club has performed admirably and look to be a tighter group than years before. Maybe it’s all the travelling together or maybe it’s Stuart Dews influence, but whatever it is seems to be making the players believe in themselves more.

This was no more apparent than in 1st gamers Charlie Ballard and Brayden Crossley who were a bright light on a cold and miserable day in Ballarat. Speaking of teams playing with belief, Melbourne has begun to find their mojo with consecutive wins where they have scored an impressive 16 goals in each game. The Demons face Carlton next week and if they are serious about playing finals this year, they need to turn this little period of games into 4 wins in a row.

PORT ADELAIDE vs ADELAIDE @ Adelaide Oval, Saturday Afternoon 5.10pm

What’s the best thing to come out of South Australia? A pie floater? Coopers Brewery? The Barossa Valley? NO, it’s 100% The Showdown!!! Showdown 44 will be a cracker and with both sets of supporters fancying that their premiership window is wide open, this latest edition will not disappoint.

After their wake up call in round 4 against the pies, The Crows have not looked back and have played like a team on a mission, clinically dismantling each opponent they have come up against, even without names like Sloane, Betts, Walker and Crouch during those periods.

Port on the other hand, after starting the season so hot, has cooled off in recent weeks and have fallen into an inconsistent pattern of trading wins and losses from week to week. It’s likely that Port will look to add raging bull Sam Powell-Pepper and Tom Rockliff to bolster their midfield mix and will need them to be at top flight if they are to stop a streak of 6 consecutive losses to their crosstown nemesis.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Either team under 39.5 margin ($1.25)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Port Adelaide +39.5 ($1.20)

WESTERN BULLDOGS vs BRISBANE @ Etihad Stadium, Saturday Night 7.25pm

Do the Doggies have their bite back after consecutive wins for the first time this season or are the 0 and 7 Lions hungry for their first win and ready to pounce on an injury-riddled kennel? In challenging conditions the young pups acquitted themselves well and were led in the engine room by the likes of Jack Macrae, Lachie Hunter and revelation Toby Mclean, who they will need again to perform well this week if they are to make it 3 wins in a row.

On the other side, Brisbane’s engine room is not full of slouches either, in fact with names like Beams, Stefan Martin and the magician Zorko it can be argued that the Lions boast the better midfield. The big question mark in this game is whether Bontompelli will be right to play after he was a late withdrawal in round 7, If the Bont is deemed fit to play it could swing the pendulum in the Dogs advantage, as the man is a proven difference maker.

Seeing as the game is being played at Etihad and the form the Lions showed against the pies last week, hopefully, we see a high scoring battle between two of the younger sides in the comp.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Brisbane +30.5 ($1.40)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: 1st Quarter total score over 35.5 ($1.46)

FREMANTLE vs ST KILDA @ Optus Stadium, Saturday Night 8.10pm

St Kilda has been the most inaccurate team in the competition this year averaging 12.7 behinds a game and has only kicked more goals than behinds in one game this season, which was Round 1 against Brisbane. The Saints were a team where many expected them to rise this season but clearly, the group’s confidence is shot and now they are left to try to pick up the pieces and attempt to salvage some respect out of the year for their fans.

The Saints must view this matchup vs the Dockers as winnable, and by doing so, they can get the ball rolling in the right direction for the club and it’s supporters. Standing in the saints way is Nat Fyfe, who many media experts are predicting is currently leading the Brownlow medal at this stage of the year.

The only loss Fremantle has had this year at home was a narrow 8 point defeat to derby foes West Coast, so accounting for a down on confidence St Kilda unit should be high on the agenda of Ross Lyons men.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Fremantle to Win ($1.25)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: St Kilda +41.5 ($1.39)

NORTH MELBOURNE vs RICHMOND @ Etihad Stadium, Sunday Afternoon 1.10pm

Where has Mason Wood been hiding this season, behind Jarrad Waite’s shadow it seems. But the wait is over for Roos fans, as he put in a 4 goal match-winning effort against the Swans which can only be described as elite. In fact, if the Kangaroos are able to consistently field a 3 pronged attack with Brown, Waite and Wood as the main targets, this Kangaroos outfit may find themselves neck deep in finals action when September comes along.

That is definitely where Richmond will find themselves as they are at the top of the food chain in season 2018 and don’t look to have any chinks in their battle-tested armour. From Butler offering his silver service off a flank, to Rance charging full steam ahead like a freight train repelling everything that comes into the backline, it’s hard not to sit back and just appreciate the style of football the Tigers are playing.

Home ground advantage will be with the Kangaroos in this one as the Tigers prefer the expanses of the MCG (having played 6 of 7 games at the MCG) where they can exploit teams with their pace and ferocity. This is set to make things interesting for Sunday as North are much more familiar with the narrower Etihad dimensions, having played 16 games at the venue since the start of last season compared to Richmond’s 4 in the same timespan.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Total Game score Under 190.5 ($1.22)

COLLINGWOOD vs GEELONG @ MCG, Sunday Afternoon 3.20pm

The Holy Trinity will be together again for this matchup, with Gary Ablett expected to be passed fit to play after overcoming a hamstring injury. The Pies will be saying their prayers and sweating over the health of skipper Scott Pendlebury, after he was spotted leaving Brisbane airport in a moon boot, after the club’s thrilling win over the Lions last week.

Last time we saw Tom Hawkins not play, the Cats put on a clinic, disposing of Port Adelaide with a smaller, yet more unpredictable forward line, featuring Dangerfield. With Ablett back, the Cats will have another option for goals while Hawkins serves his 1 game ban for making intentional contact with an umpire.

Having won 4 of their last 5 matches, Collingwood are trending in the right direction and when you combine that positivity Geelong must be feeling after obliterating the Giants by 61 points at home last week, we are set to finish round 8 with an absolute classic on our hands.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Collingwood +31.5 ($1.25)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Collingwood +31.5 ($1.25)
