AFL Tips Round 9, AFL Tipping: Round Preview and Expert Analysis from Sports Guru

Adelaide has been a little off lately and all it took was a 3rd quarter blitz from Port Adelaide last weekend to expose the Crows’ weaknesses. The Crows are sorely missing Sloane’s class in the middle and will have their work cut out for them this week against the Bulldogs elite midfield group with the likes of MacRae and Hunter on fire lately.

The Crows can’t seem to buy a trick with injuries this season though and Mitch McGovern has just been sidelined for 2 months with a high ankle sprain. But with or without injuries we’re expecting Adelaide to inflict some pain, especially coming off a loss like this to their arch-rivals, Port Adelaide. Betts is due for a big one and even without McGovern, we just can’t see the Bulldogs stopping the Crows forwards from doing what they do best.

NMFC vs GIANTS @ Blundstone Arena, Saturday 1.45pm

North Melbourne continues to keep on surprising the football world. They lost the game against the Tigers only due to inaccuracy in front of the big sticks and had them covered all over the field. It was just Richmond’s desire to hold on that gave them the 4 points in the end.

The Giants are decimated with injuries right now and may be without key back and Captain, Phil Davis. They will need him if they are to stop the potency of big Ben Brown. As much as we feel North should win this game, the Giants are in desperate need of a victory so we’re expecting this game to be super close. To pick a winner here is quite hard but we’re going to go with North just because of the Giants injury list and the fact that it is being played in Tasmania, which should be an advantage for the Kangas even though they are coming off a 6-day break compared to 7 for the Giants.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: North 1-39 ($2.37)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Heath Shaw 20 Disposals or More ($1.28)

For the 2nd time in consecutive years, the Suns and Port Adelaide will do battle in Shanghai, China. Last time, the Power demoralized the Suns by a cruisy 115 points and we wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing happens this year. Fortunately for the Suns, Captain May was cleared over last week’s umpire contact, but will his influence be enough to stop Port’s elite forward group? We think not. When the Power is on they are simply electric. All it took them last week was a 3rd Quarter Blitz and all of a sudden they were in the lead against the Crows who had them finished at halftime. Robbie Gray went bananas, kicking 4 goals, and the Power went from Cruise Control into Turbo Charger 3,000’s.

The Suns were absolutely whipped last weekend against Melbourne at the Gabba and it will take some kind of miracle for them to leave China with a victory in hand. The question really is how much Port Adelaide will win this by…

ESSENDON vs GEELONG @ THE MCG, Saturday 4.35pm

Where did it all go wrong down at Windy Hill? Well, they have started making moves – that’s for sure – by axing Mark Neeld from his assistant coaching role. The players are lacking enthusiasm & there are serious questions over the leadership and general unity of the playing group. Can they turn it all around this weekend? We hope so for Bombers fans but the reality is that it’s highly unlikely. Geelong, on the other hand, is a force to be reckoned with. With Ablett and Taylor back from injury, they were all over the Pies last weekend and didn’t let them get so much as a sniff. We feel the only way Essendon can win this game is if Geelong are OFF their game & don’t play to their usual high standards, but we can’t see that happening.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Geelong -13.5 ($1.36)

SYDNEY vs FREMANTLE @ THE SCG, Saturday 7.25pm

The Swans are fooling everyone so far this year by winning all the hard games away from the SCG only to return home and get beaten. They are 1-3 at the SCG this year and will have to start changing this urgently if they are to be featured in September finals action. What a game by first-year player Ronke, who tore the Hawks apart last Friday night… He’s been awarded a Rising Star nomination this week for his efforts, and deservedly so. Can he pull out more magic this weekend? We like his chances considering big Buddy Franklin is still out, nursing a bruised heel.

Freo seemed to have whipped away all the internal bravado and innuendo surrounding Ross Lyon and the playing group and put a rampaging Saints team to bed. Nathan Fyfe is back in Brownlow Medal form and Lachie Neale continues to dominate too. Add to this their young, up and coming stars such as Banfield and Brayshaw and things are looking good for the next couple of years for the Dockers.

But can they come over to Sydney and get the job done? We don’t think so this week, but keep an eye on the weather as it may play a part in how close this game actually is.

Another team desolate and bereft of confidence are the mighty Saints. They just can’t seem to get their mojo working this season and it is going to take something special for them to get back to their winning ways. They haven’t won a game since Round 1 and apart from the draw against the Giants, they haven’t even looked like winning. Saying this, they do put patches of good footy together but it needs to be prolonged. Collingwood does not play at Etihad too often and this will definitely benefit the Saints, who are returning from the West. Can they pull out that attacking game style they brought to the table against Brisbane and GWS? We hope so.

Collingwood on the other hand have definitely impressed so far this season, considering their long line of injuries. They sit in 11th place on the ladder right now and if they consider themselves a chance to be playing in September this year, then this game is one of those games that they just need to win. They will be sweating on the fitness of Captain Pendlebury here.

For us, it is a tough game to call. It’s a definite ‘danger game’ for the Pies, as the Saints just can’t keep losing. We’ll stick with Collingwood but not with much confidence.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Saints +41.5 ($1.25)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Collingwood Win ($1.33)

Carlton can finally breathe a sigh of relief after winning their first game for 2018 last week against the Bombers. Make that two sighs of relief, after the Blues Brothers – who were both cited for touching the umpire – were cleared to play this weekend. Ed and Charlie Curnow have been amazing this season and without them, Carlton would have been hammered by Melbourne. Coming off their win last week, Carlton’s confidence will be soaring; they’ll try and ride this momentum to shock the Dees at home.

Melbourne is doing it quite nicely so far this year. Last week was just another showing of this as they tore apart the Suns at the Gabba. This matchup is very similar to the Geelong vs Essendon game, meaning it is Melbourne’s game to lose. We just can’t see Carlton beating Melbourne unless the Demons return to their old ways and lose the games that they are meant to win.

James Corbin’s Free AFL Tip: Melbourne Win Over 15.5 Points ($1.30)

Russell Adams’ Free AFL Tip: Melbourne -24.5 ($1.55)

Can you feel the tension in the air right now? Hawks fans are still fuming over the fact they have to see their superstar ex-captain wearing another team’s colours. It comes down to Luke Hodge vs Hawthorn and we feel sparks are going to fly. If there is anyone who knows an opposition team better than anyone else in the game right now, then it is surely Luke Hodge (plus ex-Hawthorn Assistant Coach and now Brisbane Head Coach Chris Fagan). This one has DANGER GAME written all over it.

Brisbane still remains the only winless team in the competition but has come very close to getting over the line on multiple occasions. Will they be able to get it done this weekend and stop the other 22 men who will be out for Luke Hodge’s head?

This is going to be a thriller, but feel the Hawks have too much class and poise to let the rampaging Lions embarrass them this weekend.

WEST COAST vs RICHMOND @ Optus Stadium, Sunday 2.40pm

What a game ahead! The last game of the round and clearly the Game of the Round for that matter too! This will be Richmond’s first foray into Optus Stadium and so far the only interstate team to win there this year was the Swans in Round 1. The Eagles will welcome back Nic Nat and Luke Shuey into their lineup and were impressive last week, smashing the Giants at home. Nic Nat is arguably the most influential player in the AFL right now; whenever he plays, he has a noticeable impact on his teammates, and the Eagles certainly do start flying high.

Richmond has been simply astonishing. They are quick, agile and are quick to score on the overlap off half back. The Kangaroos were determined to take them down last weekend, but couldn’t sustain the effort over 4 quarters. Against Richmond, any pressure off the pedal is when they’ll start to pull away and leave you in the dust.

I’m sure Adam Simpson will be looking at how the Roos went about it last weekend, trying to identify just how they can go about doing what the Crows did to them earlier this year, inflicting them with their first loss.

Is Richmond about due for a loss? We’re not sure, but we do know that this will be an entertaining game either way, with the winner to claim bragging rights at the top of the AFL Ladder.
