Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Chicago Cubs

MLB: 08.00 PM EST

July 23, 2018

The Chicago Cubs (58-40) finished their five-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals strong in a 7-2 win on Sunday afternoon. Chicago saw their lead in the NL Central swell to 3.5 games over the weekend, while St. Louis tumbled to 4th place in an ever-more-competitive division. The Cubs will welcome in the Arizona Diamondbacks (54-46) on Monday night, who sit in 2nd place in the NL West after dropping two of three at home to Colorado.

STARTING PITCHERS: Arizona LHP Patrick Corbin (6-4, 3.24 ERA) vs. Chicago RHP Luke Farrell (3-3, 3.86 ERA)

The Chicago starting rotation was taxed to the limit after five games in a four day stretch, so long reliever Luke Farrell will be recalled from AAA Iowa to make a spot start for the North Siders. He’s been solid in relief this year despite bouncing back and forth between Chicago and Iowa throughout the season. He’ll be opposed by southpaw Patrick Corbin, who will be making his seventh career start against the Cubs; he’s pitched to a 4.25 ERA over the first six.

The Cubs will have the benefit of no travel after an exhausting weekend series against St. Louis, and an afternoon game on Sunday. Arizona will be crossing two time zones with no off day after their loss to Colorado in Phoenix, and they’re thrown into the fire against a Chicago offense that is finding multiple ways to score lately. If Farrell can at minimum keep the scuffling D’backs attack at bay, there’s more than enough weapons in the Cubs lineup to jump out to a series lead on Monday night.
