Atlanta Braves vs San Diego Padres

MLB: 10.10 PM EST

June 4, 2018

The Atlanta Braves will fly west for a Monday night clash against the San Diego Padres in a National League matchup. Atlanta comes into their west-coast swing riding high after taking 3 of 4 against a very talented Washington team at SunTrust Park. Meanwhile, San Diego is on the tail end of a 10-game homestand, having gone 5-2 at Petco Park with just this series against Atlanta remaining.

STARTING PITCHERS: Atlanta RHP Julio Teheran (4-3, 4.03 ERA) vs. San Diego LHP Clayton Richard (3-6, 4.74 ERA)

Monday night will feature a matchup between each team’s Opening Day starters, both of whom have had subpar beginnings to the 2018 campaign. Teheran has electric stuff, but has pitched into some tough luck thus far; his 1.22 WHIP is better than league average, but his 4+ ERA shows that he’s had trouble preventing the baserunners that do reach from circling the bases. Richard, meanwhile, is the de facto ace of a San Diego pitching staff that isn’t particularly impressive, and although the southpaw has a couple solid starts sprinkled on his ledger thus far, his arsenal isn’t overpowering and he’ll rely on pinpoint accuracy and soft contact to have any chance.

Clayton Richard is 0-6 with a 6.75 ERA in his career against the Atlanta Braves, and this version of Atlanta will pose another threat to that record, as the Braves sit atop the NL East after dispatching the Nats this weekend. With the more talented starter and more run-producers up and down the lineup, I’ll take the Braves to start their road trip with a win, despite the lack of a travel day.
