Boston Red Sox vs Seattle Mariners

MLB: 10.10 PM EST

June 14, 2018

Two streaking teams will meet at Safeco Field for a four-game series that will be important in determining the landscape of the top of the American League standings. AL East division leaders Boston Red Sox will travel to Seattle after sweeping three games from the lowly Baltimore Orioles, where they will meet a Mariners team fresh off a sweep of their own, at home against the Los Angeles Angels.

STARTING PITCHERS: Boston LHP David Price (7-4, 4.00 ERA) vs. Seattle LHP Felix Hernandez (6-5, 5.70 ERA)

Tonight will feature a battle of two former American League Cy Young Award winners. David Price (won in 2012) has been terrific of late, going 5-0 in his last six starts. Felix Hernandez, meanwhile, has been a departure of his usual self. His ERA is at a career high of 5.70 and his manager has commented that he hasn’t looked like himself lately. His last time out, though, was a gem, allowing just one run over eight innings of work.

Both of these teams are playing great baseball right now, but Boston will throw the significantly more consistent starter, and it’s hard to want to back a Mariners team that has as many one-run wins as wins of any other type. I’ve written before that success in one-run games in largely arbitrary as related to overall team record, and such success in close games is not sustainable over a 162-game season. Give me the Sox on the road in game one tonight.
