Chicago Cubs vs Los Angeles Dodgers

MLB: 10.00 PM EST

June 25, 2018

The Chicago Cubs are reeling after a surprising four-game weekend sweep at the hands of the last-place Cincinnati Reds. They’ll travel to Los Angeles for Monday night’s opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team they took two of three from just a week ago in the Windy City. The Dodgers are coming off a three-game sweep of the New York Mets in Queens, including a 7 HR barrage on Sunday in an 8-7 win.

STARTING PITCHERS: Chicago RHP Duane Underwood Jr (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Los Angeles RHP Kenta Maeda (4-4, 3.84 ERA)

The Cubs will turn to rookie right-hander Duane Underwood to make his major league debut on Monday night, filling in for the rotation as Chicago will be playing its seventh game in six calendar days. With fifth starter Tyler Chatwood away for personal reasons, Underwood will be called up from AAA Iowa and be tasked with facing a Dodgers offense trending the right direction. Los Angeles will counter with Maeda, who pitched against the Cubs just six days ago, and lasted just 3 and 2/3 innings in a losing effort.

With the Cubs having a rocky weekend in Ohio and the Dodgers seeming to find their power stroke against New York, oddsmakers have been very generous to Los Angeles for Monday’s series opener. But, Chicago’s offense appeared on Sunday’s contest against the Reds (they managed 10 hits in an 8-6 loss), so I’m more optimistic about them tonight than Vegas seems to be. I’ll take the Cubs ATS to keep this one close, banking on the offense being familiar enough with Maeda to give their rookie pitcher some run support.
