Chicago Cubs vs Milwaukee Brewers

MLB: 08.10 PM EST

September 4, 2018

The Chicago Cubs (81-56; 1st in NL Central) were unable to hang on in the late stages of a 4-3 loss to the host Milwaukee Brewers (78-61; 2nd in NL Central) in the Labor Day series opener. The Brewers moved to within 4 games of the NL Central leaders with the win, and now hold a 1.5 game lead over St. Louis for the first National League Wild Card spot.

STARTING PITCHERS: Chicago LHP Mike Montgomery (4-4, 3.82 ERA) vs. Milwaukee LHP Wade Miley (2-2, 2.18 ERA)

Montgomery has been a solid arm for Chicago this year, having begun 2018 as a long reliever in the bullpen, but being pressed into starting action with a bevy of injuries to the rotation, as well as the ineffectiveness of newly acquired Tyler Chatwood. He’s started once against the Brew Crew in 2018, allowing just a run in six efficient innings, but taking the loss in one of 8 shutouts between the two teams this year. Southpaw Wade Miley will get the nod for Milwaukee, and he pitched well his last time out, surrendering just a single run in a win against Cincinnati.

On the surface, Miley has terrific numbers this year for the Brewers’ rotation, but his WHIP suggests he’s due for a fair amount of regression. His WHIP is way up 1.65 pitching at Miller Park this year, well above league average of 1.30. He also struggled mightily in his most recent outing against the Cubs, getting knocked around in July 2017 when he was a Baltimore Oriole. Chicago has been playing extremely well as of late, and I favor them in this matchup to rebound after a tough Monday night loss.
