Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

The Chicago Cubs (61-45) fell into a first-place tie with rvial Milwaukee after a heartbreaking 5-4 loss late Tuesday night to the Pittsburgh Pirates (56-52). Addison Russell drove in a run with what appeared to be an RBI triple with nobody out in the 9th inning, but after replay review, Russell was determined to have overslid third base and was called out to squelch the rally. The brief two-game set will wrap up on Wednesday night with another game under the lights of PNC Park.
STARTING PITCHERS: Chicago LHP Cole Hamels (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Pittsburgh RHP Nick Kingham (5-5, 4.80 ERA)
Trade deadline acquisition Cole Hamels will make his first start for his new team after being acquired for a handful of low-level players from Texas. The southpaw had an ERA near 5.00 for the Rangers in 2018, but suffered from pitching in the hitters’ environment of Globe Life Park in Arlington. Hamels’ road ERA was under 3.00, and the Cubs are hoping a change of scenery and a playoff push will bring out the best of the former World Series MVP. He’ll be opposed by rookie right-hander Nick Kingham, who was touched up for six earned runs in his most recent outing, a loss to the lowly Mets.
With a pair of starting pitchers with season ERA marks near 5.00, the Vegas total of 8 runs seems a little soft, especially with two offenses that have proven to be capable of putting runs on the board. I’ll back the over in the hope that at least one starter falters in the series finale.
