Chicago Cubs vs San Francisco Giants

MLB: 10.10 PM EST

July 9, 2018

The Chicago Cubs will take to the road after an impressive homestand, in which they went 7-1 at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. Perhaps more impressive is the fact that the Cubs trailed at some point in all eight games, and managed to come back to win all but one of them. Monday night, they’ll travel to the West Coast to face a San Francisco Giants team fresh off a four-game split at home against the St. Louis Cardinals.

STARTING PITCHERS: Chicago RHP Kyle Hendricks (5-8, 4.27 ERA) vs. San Francisco LHP Andrew Suarez (3-5, 3.92 ERA)

The 2016 ERA leader in all of baseball, Kyle Hendricks hasn’t looked like his typical self thus far in the 2018 season for the Cubs. With a below-average velocity, Hendricks will rely on finesse and soft contact to navigate through big league lineups, and his ability to place the ball on corners has been his issue early on. He’s been susceptible to the long ball as well, having allowed 16 HR in his 17 starts. He will be opposed by Giants rookie southpaw Andrew Suarez, who has been good of late. Suarez has lost just once in his last 8 starts, and has managed to retain his spot in the San Francisco rotation despite the Giants getting some regular hurlers back from injury.

Monday night may well be a war of attrition, as both teams will jump right back into competition after battling in their respective weekend series. The Giants are still missing quite a bit of pop from their lineup (Joe Panik, Evan Longoria, and Gorkys Hernandez are all injured), so I’ll back the Cubs to grab the first game on the road, riding an offense that has seen a spike in production of late.
