Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals

MLB: 8.15 PM EST

May 04, 2018

One of the fiercest rivalries in Major League Baseball will take center stage on Friday night as the Chicago Cubs (16-12) will invade Busch Stadium to take on their NL Central foes, the St. Louis Cardinals (17-12). The series opener will kick off with a pitching matchup between LHP Jose Quintana (3-1, 5.74 ERA) for the North Siders and surprising righty Miles Mikolas (3-0, 3.27 ERA) for the Redbirds.

The Cubs have dropped two straight to Colorado after reeling off a five game winning streak, and get back out on the road for the first time in a week and a half. St. Louis has catapulted their rivals in the standings in the early going, after sweeping a brief two-game set against the White Sox at home.

Baseball has long preached regression to the mean, and it’s hard to imagine there not being a measure in self-correction for each starter as the season progresses. Quintana has a very solid career 3.58 ERA (over two full runs lower than his mark thus far), while Mikolas has pitched to a 4.78 ERA (a run and a half higher than his 2018 numbers) in his brief American career. Add in the fact that the Cubs are 2-0 after scheduled off days this year, and that St. Louis is hitting just .213 against lefties this year, and it’s hard to not see value in the underdog Cubbies.
