Chicago Cubs vs Washington Nationals

MLB: 07.05 PM EST

September 6, 2018

The Washington Nationals (69-71; 3rd in NL East) may have been all but eliminated from playoff contention, but they continue their run of important games toward determining the National League postseason landscape when they host the Chicago Cubs (82-57; 1st in NL Central) in the first of a four-game series on Thursday night. Chicago is coming off a nailbiting 6-4 triumph at current Wild Card leader Milwaukee (which missed yesterday’s under by a half-run), while the Nats dropped two of three to the team chasing the Brewers in the Wild Card, the St. Louis Cardinals.

STARTING PITCHERS: Chicago RHP Kyle Hendricks (11-10, 3.77 ERA) vs. Washington RHP Stephen Strasburg (7-7, 4.09 ERA)

Both starters have settled into expected form in recent weeks after uncharacteristically shaky moments in the 2018 campaign. Hendricks has turned in three consecutive quality starts for Chicago, including allowing just a run in his last 13 innings pitched over two starts. Strasburg has been similarly effective as of late, rebounding from a difficult July/August with quality starts his last two times out. Washington has won three straight games started by the former first overall pick.

Neither team will have the benefit off an off day on Thursday night, and fatigue might be amplified further by the Cubs playing a night game in Milwaukee, then having to travel overnight to the nation’s capital. That, combined with the recent run of solid outings from the two starters tonight, make the under an attractive play against a pretty standard totals line.
