Cleveland Indians vs Chicago Cubs

MLB: 08.05 PM EST

May 23, 2018

The Chicago Cubs have been one of the most maddeningly inconsistent teams in the early stages of the MLB season. They’re near the top of the National League in run differential due to several blowouts of opposing teams, but are just 25-20 on the year because of their poor record in close games. Tonight they’ll wrap up a short 2-game series with their 2016 World Series opponents, the Cleveland Indians. The Tribe came away victorious a night ago in a 10-1 thrashing.

Tonight’s pitching matchup will feature RHP Adam Plutko (1-0 3.68 ERA), for Cleveland against Cubs ace, southpaw Jon Lester (4-1, 2.52 ERA). Lester has been his usual standout self for the North Siders after somewhat of a rocky start to open the season. His only loss of the year actually game against the Indians, where he pitched seven strong innings, but didn’t get much run support in a 4-1 loss at Progressive Field. Plutko will be making his second career start ever, which doesn’t bode particularly well against a very talented Cubs lineup that was held to just one run a night ago.

Chicago has fared slightly better against right-handed pitching this year, and seems due for a rebound after a clunker of a performance a night ago. Oddsmakers see the Cubs as a clear favorite, so I think it may be worth taking the North Siders ATS to drive the odds down.
