Los Angeles Angels vs. San Diego Padres

MLB: 09.00 PM EST

August 15, 2018

A West Coast matchup will be on the forefront of the Major League Baseball scene on Wednesday night, as the San Diego Padres will play host to the Los Angeles Angels in an interleague matchup. The Halos will be seeking the series and season sweep, having won the first two contests this week by scores of 6-3 and 7-3.

STARTING PITCHERS: Los Angeles RHP Felix Pena (1-3, 4.95 ERA) vs. San Diego RHP Robbie Erlin (2-3, 3.36 ERA)

Pena has worked to an ERA of nearly 5.00 in nine starts for the Angels. He’s only faced San Diego once in his career, back in 2016 as a reliever for the Chicago Cubs; he allowed three runs and only managed to record one out. Southpaw Robbie Erlin will get the nod for the Friars, hoping to continue his recent run of good work in what has become a de facto audition to remain in the San Diego rotation. He’s making just his fifth start of the season after beginning 2018 in the Padres’ bullpen, and he’s allowed a total of just three earned runs in his last two outings against quality offenses (Cubs and Brewers).

The Angels have played well despite the absence of superstar Mike Trout, but their lineup on the surface isn’t particularly deep without his bat anchoring the three hole. LA has also fared significantly worse against lefties this year (slashing just .221/.293/.370 against lefties in 2018, versus .257/.329/.442 against righties). With Erlin displaying the capability of being a reliable starter recently, I like San Diego to salvage the final game of this series tonight.
