Los Angeles Dodgers vs Chicago Cubs

MLB: 08.05 PM EST

June 18, 2018

The Cubs engineered a series victory over their divisional rival, the St. Louis Cardinals, over the weekend, but fell in the final game Sunday night to fail to complete a three-game sweep. Monday night they’ll return to Wrigley Field to begin a series with their NLCS opponent from the past two years, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

STARTING PITCHERS: Los Angeles RHP Kenta Maeda (4-4, 3.61 ERA) vs. Chicago RHP Tyler Chatwood (3-5, 4.12 ERA)

The series opener on Monday night will feature two pitchers searching for their first win in the month of June. Kenta Maeda, despite the two teams’ recent postseason history, will be making his first career start against Chicago. He was sidelined with a hip injury for a couple weeks until making his return last Wednesday in a no decision against Texas. Chatwood, meanwhile, hasn’t missed a start yet this year, but continues to be plagued by control issues; his 58 walks issues leads the major leagues by a fair margin. However, he’s managed to keep his ERA at a reasonable level by avoiding hard contact and displaying strikeout stuff when the situation calls for it.

Both teams have been streaking offensively in the month of June but were cooled off Sunday night against a division rival (the Cubs were shut out by St. Louis, the Dodgers managed just an unearned run in a loss to San Francisco). I like both offenses to return to their usual ways on Monday night, so the over might be a good play here as well; but given that LA had to fly across the country without an off day, I’m backing the Cubs to kick off this season series with a win.
