Minnesota Twins vs Chicago White Sox
MLB: 08.10 PM EST
August 21, 2018
The Chicago White Sox (47-77; 4th in AL Central) will play host to the Minnesota Twins (59-65; 2nd in AL Central) to kick off a two-game series, despite the two teams having played a night ago in Minnesota. The Sox emerged victorious in an 8-5 fashion on Monday night, in a makeup of an April contest that was postponed due to snow. Minnesota saw the MLB debut of starter Stephen Gonsalves spoiled, and will be hoping to return the favor on Tuesday, as one of baseball’s top pitching prospects, right-hander Michael Kopech, is slated to make his first ever appearance in the majors.
STARTING PITCHERS: Minnesota RHP Jose Berrios (11-8, 3.75 ERA) vs. Chicago RHP Michael Kopech (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Berrios has been very solid for what has been an up-and-down season for the Minnesota rotation, but the righty has failed to complete five innings his last two times out. He has historically had great success against the White Sox in his career, tallying a 6-1 record with just a 2.28 ERA. He’ll be opposed by the aforementioned Kopech, who has been strong enough in AAA in 2018 to warrant Tuesday night’s callup. He had been 7-7 with a 3.70 ERA at Charlotte.
Both teams will be making the short trek from Chicago to Minneapolis after Monday’s makeup game, so there’s no discernible travel advantage to be found. Kopech has demonstrated that he has major-league stuff down in AAA, but there’s a vast difference between potential and results in the big leagues. On that note, I feel more comfortable backing the proven Berrios and his Twins to emerge victorious in the series opener.
