Pittsburgh Pirates vs Washington Nationals

MLB: 1.05 PM EST

May 03, 2018

The Washington Nationals will complete their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the nation’s capital on Thursday afternoon, after a 9-3 win on Wednesday.

The Nats will be looking to complete a 4 game sweep of a Buccos team that has cooled off considerably after a hot start to the season in which they built a comfortable lead in the NL Central. Now they’re in the thick of a 4-team NL Central race, where everyone but the Cincinnati Reds is separated by just a game in the standings.

Jeremy Hellickson for Washington will take the hill against the Pirates’ Trevor Williams. The seasoned vet Hellickson has not had a decision yet this year, pitching to a 4.11 ERA. Williams has been a bright spot for Pittsburgh thus far, sporting a 4-1 record with a sparkling 2.29 ERA.

The Nationals have scored 21 runs in the past two wins in this series, and I expect the Pirates to throw the farm at the Washington offense to slow that trend down. They’ll be riding the back of Williams, who has been excellent in his first few starts this year. I’m looking for the Pirates to put up a significant fight to salvage a game in this series, and quiet the red-hot DC bats.
