San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs
MLB: 08.05 PM EST
August 2, 2018
The Chicago Cubs offense exploded on Wednesday night in a 9-2 victory over the host Pittsburgh Pirates to earn a split in their two-game series. They’ll return to the confines of Wrigley Field to open up a long four-game weekend set against the reeling San Diego Padres (42-68). The teams most recently met right before the All-Star Break, when the NL Central leaders came to Petco Park and won three straight against the host Padres.
STARTING PITCHERS: San Diego RHP Robbie Erlin (1-3, 3.47 ERA) vs. Chicago LHP Mike Montgomery (3-4, 4.03 ERA)
Thursday will feature a pitching matchup of two starters that began the 2018 season in the bullpen. Erlin will be making his first start in over two months after the Padres put Luis Perdoma on the disabled list with a shoulder issue. He’s never faced the Cubs as a starter in his career. Montgomery remains at the back end of the Chicago rotation despite the acquisition of Cole Hamels from Texas. He’ll be looking to bounce back from a rough outing at Busch Stadium last weekend, in which he allowed 12 hits in five innings in a losing effort. He’s 2-0 with a career 1.65 ERA against San Diego.
The Padres have dropped seven straight games, and traveling to Wrigley Field to take on the National League team with the best record may not be the best remedy for righting the ship. I’ll back Montgomery to rebound against a tepid San Diego offense and the Cubs to win going away.
