St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds

MLB: 07.00 PM EST

July 24, 2018

The Cincinnati Reds played spoiler on Monday night, coming back with two runs in the ninth inning to walk off with a 2-1 win, spoiling the major league debut of St. Louis hurler Daniel Poncedeleon after the rookie fired seven no-hit innings. Game 2 of the series will take place in central Ohio on Tuesday night.

STARTING PITCHERS: St. Louis LHP Austin Gomber (0-0, 3.77 ERA) vs. Cincinnati RHP Homer Bailey (1-7, 6.68 ERA)

Tuesday’s contest will not be described anywhere as a marquee pitching matchup. Gomber will be making his first career start for a patchwork Cardinals’ pitching staff that is fatigured after a span of six games in five days. He will be opposed by right-hander Homer Bailey, once one of the anchors of a Reds rotation that made the playoffs in consecutive years, but who has struggled immensely thus far in 2018.

Since Jim Riggleman took over as frontman for Cincinnati, these two teams have been trending in opposite directions. The Reds’ offense has catapulted them to over .500 ball since the managerial switch, while the Cardinals have tumbled all the way down to 4th place and made a coaching change as well. Bailey will have the advantage of being immensely familiar with a Cardinals lineup he has opposed many times, and I like the firepower of the Cincy offense to carry them to another win.
