Tampa Bay Rays vs Miami Marlins

MLB: 07.10 PM EST

July 2, 2018

The Tampa Bay Rays are riding high after a stretch in which they’ve won 8 of 9 ballgames, including 3 of 4 against a Houston team that leads the league by far in run differential. They will travel south to square off with instate opponent Miami Marlins in a three-game set that will get underway on Monday night.

STARTING PITCHERS: Tampa Bay RHP Nathan Eovaldi (2-3, 4.08 ERA) vs Miami LHP Wei-Yin Chen (2-5, 6.14 ERA)

Former Miami Marlin Nathan Eovaldi will make his second career start against his former team, hoping to rebound from a brutal first outing against the Fish in 2015, when he completed just two-thirds of an inning and allowed a whopping eight earned runs. He’s been solid for Tampa thus far this year, with his sparkling 0.82 WHIP not reflected in his record. Wei-Yin Chen has struggled for the Marlins in the first half of 2018, but put together a nice outing his last time, allowing just an earned run to a very good Arizona team over six innings.

This matchup of Florida teams features a pair of squads heading in different directions, as the Tampa Bay pitching staff has really been an anchor in their recent run of outstanding play that has catapulted them to an above-.500 record at 42-41. With travel times mitigated by the short distance between the two teams, I have no choice but to back the streaking Rays to win the opener at Marlins Park on Monday night.
