Washington Nationals vs Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies (74-70; 2nd in NL East) dropped both legs of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the visiting Washington Nationals (73-72; 3rd in NL East) at Citizens’ Bank Park. The setback pushed Philadelphia 6.5 games back of division-leading Atlanta, further damaging the Phils’ ever-dwindling postseason hopes.
STARTING PITCHERS: Washington RHP Stephen Strasburg (7-7, 4.04 ERA) vs. Philadelphia RHP Aaron Nola (16-4, 2.29 ERA)
In a matchup of young phenom starting pitchers, former #1 overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg will take the hill for the Nats. He’s had a solid year, but hasn’t quite been himself in four starts since returning from the disabled list with a pinched nerve. He gave up two runs in his most recent outing in 5 and 2/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs. He’ll be opposed by 2018 NL Cy Young candidate Aaron Nola, who has dominated Washington this year en route to an impressive 16-4 record. He’s 3-0 with a sparkling 1.26 ERA against the Nationals.
Philadelphia is fading in the chase for the postseason, and needs to ride their best pitcher to a much-needed win on Wednesday night. Given that Nola is intimately familiar with the Washington offense, and has had incredible success against their normally-potent offense, I like the Phillies to rebound from a tough doubleheader a day ago and get back to their winning ways.
